I went to deepest Essex over the weekend to meet author Peter Hall and take part in a Mons Graupius game that will form the climax to Peter’s series of articles on this 1st century campaign in the magazine.
I don’t want to give away too much but, suffice to say, my Celts put up a commendable performance against their Roman liberators and I think the rules used (Hail Caesar) gave a very playable but historically accurate game.
My thanks go to Peter for organising the game and his hospitality over the two days, his wife Dot for the lovely stew on Saturday and Diane at the B&B for the comfy room and hearty breakfast on Sunday morning. And not forgetting the other victims, I mean players: Steven, Richard and Alec.
Look out for Peter’s game report in a future issue. We also discussed his plans for another article on a different period – and one with a twist, so that’s something else to look forward to.
